dannyp8262's 2012 Challenge Build Thread -- COMPLETED
Well, I'm gonna try it! Best Beginner category!!
I've been lurking here for a few months and have been so inspired by all of you! I used to spend a lot of time with my dad in his little wood shop and those are my favorite memories. I've ALWAYS wanted to build a guitar but for some reason thought I had to have some "special secret skill" or something but then I see all of these threads with all these pics of these AMAZING guitars and think Hey, why not! So I'm in!! I'll be out of town until Tuesday so I'll start then Best of luck to all! Last edited by TDPRI; May 12th, 2012 at 11:48 AM. |

Well Here we go... I have done nothing yet so only my materials pic so far.
I got some old cherry from a good friend who got it while working in Atlanta several years ago. The cherry was salvaged in a remodel of Evander Holyfields home! They were floorboards! He also has tongue and groove boards from that lot that I'm welcome to as well. I am planning on building a pine body with the cherry top, string through to a TOM bridge and either a P-90 or a humbucker in the bridge position. The neck is maple. I have no workshop but have a few tools that have been in storage for a while. Mainly a table saw and a router table. I have some friends with fairly extensive wood shops that I'll be building in so updates may be far between [IMG] [/IMG]

Hahahaha Tangelolemon!!! The Champcaster it is!!!!
Well I did make a little progress today! WoooHoo!! I decided I'm gonna need some templates! So I downloaded the neck plan and picked out a pine board and roughed out my first neck template. ![]() I also got my pine body blank ready for glue-up!! ![]() I edged a pine 2x12 on my old Master Mechanic table saw (surprised it still works!!) then cut 2 smaller "wings" to get my width. ![]() Fit pretty good! ![]() It was difficult to concentrate on wood today because this ![]() and this ![]() was happening on my patio!! I LOVE cook days!!! Grilled Chicken for lunch and around 50lbs of pork butt for some friends!! which reminds me... I used to own a BBQ restaurant and I would brand my ribs... ![]() Should I brand this logo on my Champcaster body?? Here is a board I branded a few years ago to use as a background for some print stuff ![]() Should I save the cherry for another build and use some hickory for the top??? |

I would absolutely brand it! As for which wood, that's a tough call. There's all kinds of reasons why you should or shouldn't use that cherry, but if it was me, I'd probably use it.

Use whatever makes you feel better. It's your guitar, if you build something you really want or like, you'll put more soul in it.
Good luck & have fun!

Love me some barbecue! I turn out a pretty mean smoked pork butt myself!
Love the branding idea! Don't know which wood to use... but whatever you don't use in the guitar, you can use in the smoker! |

Welp, Progress today!!! I also must say that you all make this look REALLY easy!!
Not that it's difficult but I realized that never having built a guitar before I have no plan so here goes!! I was at a friend's house using her shop. so I'm trying to help her get her shop organized and teach her some basics of using her band saw, drill press, table saw, router... in exchange I can build my guitar there!!! I made a body template today ![]() Then I cut out my first body!!!!!!! I need to run it through a planer and I wish I had done that before it was cut out...Oh well... ![]() ![]() I also started working on a new neck template. ![]() ![]()

You'll be fine on running the body through the planer, just go bottom first. Looking good
are you sure this is your 1st body?
