axedaddy's 2012 Challenge Build Thread -- COMPLETED

Ok I'm in. Here's the plan:

1 piece Black Limba carved top body.

1 piece roasted maple neck. Either birdseye or flame. This wood is sweet and I am doing a very non traditional neck build.

TV Jones Power Tron + in the bridge and Classic in the neck.

Wilkinson Cut tele bridge.

Yep I'm looking forward to learning what "Roasted maple" is and how it's different from, well... not-roasted maple.

Roasted Maple is maple that is kiln dried to 4% and then vacuum kiln dried at 300-400 degrees. It darkens the colors all the way through the wood and makes it very stable. I got some really nice birdseyed and flamed boards from Sharps Lumber in Ashland NH. http://sharpslumber.com/salvagedlumber.html .

Great guys to work with, can't wait to make sawdust.

Is roasted maple better with Bacon?

Until yesterday I've never heard of roasted maple. Now this is the second time in two days. Good luck and have fun.

We all know the only thing better than Bacon is more Bacon. As a fellow Vermonter we know there is.no shortage of Bacon up here.

As for the roasted maple, I am excited to use it. Music Man, Suhr, Gibson and a few other companies are using it now.

Looking forward to seeing this take shape. I'm intrigued by the roasted maple and he carved top. Will the carved top be anything like this:

Hey Tom, the top will not be that artistic. I am thinking more like a Hamer Talladaga or something kind of
les paulish.

I don't know if I could find another piece that nice. I've had this black limba for a couple of years waiting for the right project. I figured since I am keeping this one it would be a good time to use it. If it goes good I may do a strat and an LP to match for the collection.

So here we go!!! Two 13" wide Black Limba body blanks. I will probably use the one on the left, the other is for good measure.

This is the roasted maple. The plan is to use the birdseye on the left. Its is an 1 1/16" so I am not 100% sure I will be able to get it true at an 1" thick. So I included the 5/4 flame pieces and a wenge fb blank.

Now I cut to length on the chop saw, square the edges on the jointer and then rip to width on the band saw.

This why I worried a little about the thickness, but it is pretty sweet looking wood. Now I will let it rest. I have a buddy that has a drum sander, I will try to flatten these boards with it to save as much thickness as possible.

The Honey Do List

This is one of 3 wall unit cabinets I have to get done as I work on my build. As far as the boss is concerned, minimal time on guitar, maximum time on cabinets. Progress: Plywood cabs built, 2 of the 3 face frames built, this cab is almost done. Stain coat on, now I just need to attach the face frame and put on finish coats, 1 amber shellac and 2 or 3 poly.

You need to re-arrange her list of priorities.

Did Get Some Work In This Morning

I was able to squeeze in the good stuff this morning. Marked my center line on the body blank, dropped the template, traced it out.

Then off to the bandsaw for some curvey cutting.

Ready for the awesome ROSS
