Sorry kids, back to the boring old guitarstuff.

Neck goes int the multi-jig*;

Cheapass router;

Couple passes later;

Freehanded the access hole, TR fits nicely;

Been fighting a strip of maple all morning, got fed up and decided to go with a scrap pice of hardwood skirting board, here it is on the DIY router table;

Not a clue what wood it is;

No table saw or band saw available, so the mitre saw was put to good use;

These TRs have a tendency to rattle (so I'm told) so I need to think up something to stop that. Maybe a little soft chewy candy?

Hacking off a piece;

Kidding ya! That would have made an awful mess one day. I thought this stuff might make for a nice shock absorber. Poor man's bench dogs, bench rug in fact. I cut a strip off, opened the TR put it in between the rod and the... thingy? and presto;

This is the stuff (Dutchies; they sell this at ACTION €1/rug);

Oops... neglected to take a piccie of the skunk stripe in place... Here it is all clamped up;

[* fretslotting jig, doubles as radius-sanding jig, triples as truss rod routing jig, quadruples as thicknessing jig ]

Took down the excess of the skunkstripe with the Stanley handplane.

Using the Hawley neck-pdf's to make little templates for headstock- and heel contour lines I scribbled them on there.

That's it for today. off to 'De Bolle' for beers and either pizza or tapaz after.
Tomorrow I start shaping the back profile.

SKÅL!

No, the only thing is that I'm not able to play that guitar...
When I had finished Olav's mosrite it was quite frustrating that I was could not take her for a spin.

If we were to be with a criminal organisation, Oigun might be the one that would be called 'lefty'.

Olav Nice work you don't seem to have all of the power tools that everyone else has,but your work is fantastic. I've always thought Leftys were more creative than most. You make us leftys proud

Thanks Acalan. I don't have most of the power tools the 'big boys' use. Often I wish I did, some of those nifty 'toys f'r boys' make life* a lot easier.
Also I'd like a bit more room to store my crap. Then I get reminded there's people here that build guitars on porches and in sheds that don't have doors. Those are the people I am in awe of.

*life as in 'building a guitar', what else kinda life do most of us have?

Dayum!

Yeah... this;

!!!DON'T DO IT!!!
While shaping the back profile I heard a funny papery noise when rasping on the area behind the 1st frets. So, where the TR ends. Rasped right through the skunkstripe... Turns out the no slip mat I thought to use to reduce TR rattle prevented the TR from sinking deep enough into the channel + prevented the skunk stripe from staying in place even when clamped. I've seen lots of guys have disasters on their builds so why should mine be any different? Now I gotta figure out a way to get the skunk stripe out with frigging up the maple it's glued to. Check TR channel depth, relax TR, come up with some other way to prevent rattle and make a new skunk stripe...
Bummer.
please don't ask for pix...

Sorry to disappoint lefties on a global scale

What happened here?

You can clearly see there's way too much of that stuff in there. Dunno how I could have just gone ahead and glued the skunk on top of that...

Temporary insanity?

I think I'll just start a new neck and leave this to be figured out some other time. Cut your losses and go on.

Don't let it bug you. Lesson learned, now just move on.

Just one or two drops of silicon-gunk will do... be careful, when there is a tiny bit of silicon on your wood it will mess up your paint.
Big bummer

That's right John, moving on. Did bother me yesterday, the new day has me taking this as a learning experience. Just created some 'expensive kindling'

Here we go, making lefties proud again.

Big bummer
I shoulda taken your advice first time around. No silicon goop in the house so I thought the no slip might just work too. Would have if I hadn't stuffed in a square foot of the stuff...
Dumbass.

Over it. Glad I got to it at this stage. I gt me 4 necks worth of blanks at the Bremert last time I was there so I'm not even gonna let it slow me down

It completely mystified me what it was you were putting in there.I'd probably have piped up unsolicited , but then again, what do I know
Looking forward to the new neck

As am I. Next time you see me doing something you think is 'out of the ordinary' or , please pipe up.

Back to the order of the day.
Thicknessed;

Copied the template on there;

Made some cuts to ease the coping saw's work. You'll notice I didn't cut the perpendicular lines on the 'north side' of the neck, I'll be needing a strip to make the new skunk stripe;

There it is, made a point of cutting closer to the line than I usually do. There's the strip too;

Nice mapley smell in the garage;

Stuck the template on and smacked it on the routertable;

Changed bit and turned over;

Just the one burnmark (vintage correct spot! I deserve a pancake turbo!) and the tiniest little tearout -that'll sand right out when I do the routerseems [edit; that'll even disappear altogether when I thin down the headstock!];

Scribbled some lines, spaced the TR;

daaaaaaaay-o! day-ay-ay-o!

Tomorrow I make a couple $$$ and at night meet with a local guitarist so no sawdust from me till at least wednesday.

My 1991 Tele Plus has a little wobble right about there on the headstock, exactly the same place I got a little bit of tearout on my neck template.
Where do I send the pancake?

Is your new neck sitting on a giant banana?
Has it been tallied?
