So... I think I've got my concept: A double neck Tele in the style of a Mosrite Joe Maphis model. Not sure if its going to be a 6/12 or a 6/octave but i'm thinking a slightly offset body with those sexy deep carves and binding! I may fail miserably!

Finally able to make it to the lumberyard... Picked up a nice plank of 4/4 curly maple, a piece of poplar, and enough Pau Ferro for 4 fretboards. I changed my plans, i'm not going double neck but it will still be inspired by both a Mosrite and a Tele built for Buck Owens....

Bahaha! Awesome pic, but no, I've decided to go with less necks (as in just one). I'm working out an offset Tele with a carved top and bindings similar to a Mosrite, with this paint scheme:

Apparently this one was built for Buck Owens, so its like the link between the Tele and the Mosrite

Finally had some time to work on this thing.
Here's the poplar, ready to be planed, then jointed on my $25 CL jointer.

I cut the board down into 2 18" pieces and ran them through my Grizzly planer a few times. It's very snipe-happy, so i add these sacrificial strips. I'll plane it down to 1 5/8"

I mark the feed direction on top of the board. I do this because I will joint the two edges with the feed direction opposed, so in case my fence is off I'll still get a perfectly flat joint...

All clampified

I check the back for level. Looks good!!

I'll let the glue dry overnight and remove the clamps. More to come!!

EDIT:
Here is the picture of my wood:
I've got a chunk of poplar, some Pao Ferro, and some flamey maple. Sorry for the horrible cell phone picture!

Body blank is freed of its' clampy prison and the "slightly modified" tele template is laid upon it. I took the TDowns blueprint and added a Mosrite-ish offset waist and lower horn from pictures.

Let's add the tele bridge location and control cavity, although its probable these will have to be moved to compensate for scale length and body contours...

Oh yeah!

I cut the body shape out on the band saw as close to the line as possible and finish up with the oscillating spindle sander. I was way too lazy/cheap to cut an MDF template that I would only use once...

Next, I cut a .060" groove around the body for the binding

And then blast a cove bit around the perimeter..

After that I then add the second template that gives me a rough idea where I want the Mosrite-y carve to be

...And start carving to the line with some mini-planes, spokeshaves, and plain old sandpaper

A few hours and some bloody fingers later, I arrive at this...

But something doesn't look right...I don't like it. I think that the carved area is too "tall", so I will put it in the router-planer-fixture thing and take off 1/4" from the top.

Next up is routing the neck pocket...
First, I hog out a bunch of material using a Forstner bit. Then, since again i don't want to make an MDF template, I use the neck heel and some scrap MDF to create my own makeshift template for the router

I shave off ~ 1/4" from the top and do some re-shaping of the carve... Much better I think, although the body is a bit thin now... I think I'll add a 1/4" of poplar to the back.

I mark out where I want to make the top carve a little deeper.

I picked this up from Lowes. Makes the job way faster and less bloody fingers to boot!!

Meanwhile, I do some more work on the neck. I picked up a 5 pack of double action truss rods from eBay for 30 bucks... I like them because they require a 1/4" wide groove as opposed to StewMac's 3/16" wierdo groove...

I flip it around and do some final thicknessing of the blank

I resaw the Pao Ferro and thicknessed the board with the planer

Next, I double sided taped the board to the neck blank and ran around it with a pattern bit, avoiding the truss rod area.

Ughhh, its time to add a radius to the board. I'm going with a Gibsonesque 12" radius. Lets mark the board with some chalk to track the progress

And sand and sand and sand

Until finally, there's no chalk marks left. That sucked.

Next move is to decide whether or not i'm gonna bind this board or not...

Binding it is!
Yeah, this Pao Ferro is good stuff, cheap and its a pretty close match to rosewood. It even smells good when its cut.

Ugh, so as I was routing the board for binding, I slipped and took a chunk out of it. Luckily, I have enough Pao Ferro for a few more boards!
I slotted the board on my homemade jig:

rigged up a fixture to rout 1/8" groove for a Fender-style nut. worked good!!

Next, I drilled the board for some little dots.
I used 3/32" side dot material

Since i took so much material off the front of the carve, I decided that I wanted to add some wood to the back so it doesn't look so.....weird.
1/2" board from Lowes... This piece cost me just as much as my body plank!!!

One thing that I realized was that I ordered from Stew Mac the wrong size binding (wanted .060", got .040"). So now i decided I'm going to do a 2 strip white black binding.... should look sharp!! Just gotta wait for the binding to come. Luckily, Stew mac orders usually get here in 2 days.
Thats it for now...
