Electricity goes from + to - . So if you want to remove the chrome, + must be attached to the bridge. If you put the - on the bridge, it will collect stuff from the metal bar.

How much salty? I don't really know. The water is almost saturated. the more salt you put, the easier it is for the electricity to flow.
