I don’t have a favorite beer, but a favorite beer style. And it’s Barley Wine for me.
Strong, intense, “hit-you-over-the-head” and “knock-your-socks-off” ales always appealed to me. The very first beer I ever liked was an ale -- not a lager.
Barley Wine is the high-octane, black liquorice, intensely bitter beer that’s great in fall and winter. Rogue’s “
Old Crusty” (11.2%) is about the best I’ve had, although Sierra Nevada’s “
Bigfoot” (9.6%) is pretty close.
I also enjoy IPAs, especially in the summer. Anderson Valley’s “
Hop Ottin’ IPA” (7%) is among the best I’ve had in a bottle.
Most memorable beer is the insanely strong Dogfish Head “
120 Minute IPA.” 20% and around $10 per 12 oz. bottle.
One of my fantasies is to take these beers to Europe and let the Europeans who laugh at American beers sample the best beer in the world.
