You could change just the pickups without any trouble, although I think the stock ones sound great and are really quiet. These guitars are shielded pretty well. While you're in there, I would consider putting in a nicer tone cap. The pots are decent full size alphas. I left the stock pickups in mine but replaced the pots and tone cap with CTS solid shaft pots and a big ol orange drop cap.
