Jim, thanks, I really appreciate your reply. I don't have a circuit diagram, so I'm a bit in the dark.
As I'm a Brit, we don't have the expression 'dimed' - is that 0 or 10? and is 10 where the series resistance is 0 or 500k?
Also, when you turn the vol pot down and you get more of the pot in series, why does that not change the tone?
