To take the cynical view:
If they think the word "Semi-hollow" will sell more guitars. It's a semi-hollow.
I had an early Gretch Bass that was semi-hollow. It didn't sound like a P-Bass. But that wasn't the issue. It was such a terrible nose diver that my arm and neck would start to ache after awhile from holding it up while I played. I don't remember the model. It was a deep maroon red color, ebony fingerboard, neck like a baseball bat, F-holes were painted on.
