I always went with the store-branded freebies, a teardrop, light to medium weight, but I've gravitated to fingers-only now. Took me a lifetime to get used to it .. however, I still use a pick for rhythm playing.

Edit: Years ago, one of my buddies who worked for a major guitar store here, gave me a mic bag filled with a few hundred assorted picks for my birthday. It's funny, but I still preferred those freebies from the music stores ... no matter what I bought from them, I always asked for a couple of free picks. They're nothing special, but I loved 'em.

2nd edit: I used a felt pick at one time when I played a lot of bass. A hard plastic middle, surrounded by felt. It made for a nice soft tone on a bass.
