Make sure to read your contract of carriage. Because it was an international flight you're covered under treaty about how much you get etc.

And always be polite and firm with them. If you're the calm and reasonable guy who's been wronged you'll get alot further along than if you're the nutcase with the broken guitar. IMHO.
