I'd heard that MJ agreed to the tour to avoid selling off his half of the Northern Songs (Lennon-McCartney)/MJ publishing. And that if he'd only played the 10 shows instead of the 50, he'd be in default of his deal with the promoters, and they'd get the catalog. So, there could be compelling reasons either way to have him do or not do the tour, and live or die.
Plus, of course, the guy was a raving drug addict, so "good thinking" may have been notably absent from his business decisions.
