Too high and they get ice-pick, so logic suggests lower for warmer sound. But a tele/esquire bridge pu is supposed to be bright and trebley.

+1. That's exactly what I was thinking - plus it's way easier to experiment with pickup height than ripping it apart and messing with the internals.
Then again....I normally rip mine apart and mess with the internals every time I change strings.
