Is this your first Tele?
I got a Squier Tele & Peavey Generation (nice btw) off of e-bay. I was lucky. Both were pretty nice. If you live in a large metro area you should have plenty of opportunities to get your hands on some. I highly recommend doing that.
I've played a Tele now for about 7 months...If I had $400 knowing what I know now, I'd probably go for the CV. I also really like this Peavey Generation - $150 used - that leave you some cash to upgrade the pickups to exactly what you want.
Also, if you don't have good amp, $400 can get you something pretty nice.
