A couple of months back, I bought the

Phonic Powerpod 740 Plus / S715 PA System from MusiciansFriend for the music stage in my garage, which is intended primarily for my children to screw around on and build their musical skills. At first, I feared it was going to turn out to be a foolish purchase, but it far exceeded my expectations. I run vocals through it -- no feedback whatsoever -- along with a keyboard and its onboard drum machine. I also like to play bass through it plugged in direct. It sounds great. I've also run my computer (located in my drum isolation room) into it, just in case I want to play along with things I've recorded.
No, it's probably not the best choice to haul it around in a van, playing gigs hither and yon, but if you're looking for something that's going to stay planted in a rehearsal room, it should do the trick. When I bought the package, it was on sale for $50 cheaper, but Phonic has similar PA packages available at a

variety of price points.
The cheap Chinese junk that's available these days is just incredible!
