Flat wounds on a string-through bridge?

I just purchased a used Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass TB through Music Go Round - it should be here in a couple of days. I'm sure it'll come with round wound strings and I'm sure I'll be wanting to replace them with flat wounds. Is it possible to use flat wounds on a string-through or does that put too much strain on the windings? Also, this is a full scale bass - do I need to get extra-long strings for a string-through design, or will long work?

Thanks.
