I'm late to this thread but just wanted to cast another vote for the Marshall ED-1.

My friend has been trying out a few of them and through him I got to try the Boss CS-1 (ridiculously slow attack, unusable), the CS-3 (noisy POS, worst pedal ever) and the CS-2. The CS-2 is the only compressor that came close to the ED-1, both are good pedals but the ED-1 was a bit more lively and had less tone-suck.

My friend tried an Electro-Harmonix Soul Preacher that he hated so much he didn't even offer to let me try it before he put it on Ebay.

I'm really happy with my ED-1, I've had it for over a year now and I know what it can do with my rig. It really fattens up my Strat sound, and countrifies my Teles and p90 LP.
