Being "invested" in both worlds I would say that for simplicity and ease of use you cannot beat the small 8 tracks, Boss, Tascam etc, and the price is very attractive too.
I have a Boss BR8, a Yamaha AW2816 and a PC setup with Cakewalk Sonar. If I didn't have a mind full of big projects I probably would not have come to the PC setup, but now that I am already here , oh well, I like it, I use it.
If simple , inexpensive and small is the focus, the Tascam is a nice machine, just be sure you can USB backup files both directions. .
