Folks started using the middle Strat add on in mid-late '70s.
I had mine added in '74 and a local guy made me a 5 way switch
from a 3-way. There weren't any available over the counter then
and Fender did not have any until '76(?) on factory Strats.

I hadn't seen or heard anyone with it then other than the guy who did
mine. Main thing is it worked and sounded really good.
I got the used pickup at the Sho-Bud store on Lower Broad.
It was pretty old.

I actually wanted to add the 3rd pickup before I moved to
Nashville but just never got to it in finding someone to do it
proper. That and finding a loose Strat pickup then wasn't
easy. There wasn't any AM pickups available until later on.
