I still routinely gig with a BOSS GT-6 running amp modeling through an ancient Peavey SS amp. It's not my ideal tone, but it gets the job done, cheaply and efficiently (ie. less worry about theft of high-priced irreplacable gear). Try to get a good tone, but worry far more about what you are saying than the gear you are saying it through. In the end, other guitarists are the only people who give a darn about what equipment you're using. Play great notes through lousy gear, if necessary...and perhaps we'll all be choosing the same lousy gear to try and duplicate YOUR tone...
I kind of agree from the point of audiophiles, who obsess over tone only they can here.

However I would say "quality" of sound is very important in that a song played on guitar through a flanger will sound totally different played on a piano. The actual texture and feel of a sound can affect the song as much as a change in notes, a lot of electronic music for example relies heavily on filters. Daniel Ash played through a "crappy" SS amp but focused on the overall texture and feel to get the sound he wanted.

I get a little tired of Guitar -> Amp guys acting like there way is the best all the time, like they somehow "grew out" of effects and are more mature guitarists for focusing on what they're playing. This is very insulting to textural guitarists and synth players.
