I have a BBR Orange Squash...I love BBE stuff in general. The Orange Squash is subtle; perhaps too subtle. It's like a Dynacomp dialed way back on the compression.

I would buy a Dynacomp for a first compressor. Super simple...volume and simple compression. You can get simple dynamic control or a big squeeze with a Dynacomp. There are a zillion of them in use.

Another good one that is cheap is the DOD Milk Box. The Milk Box has an attack control which is nice.

I have a Milk Box, a Boss CS3, an Orange Squash and a DynaComp. I always come back to the DynaComp.
