I tested it... it is a lot of menus to get that to work correctly... I helped a friend get his going... and we could not get the board input plus the microphones to work simultaneously which his band needed as they don't mic everything....
it does have a little recorder/mixer but, man, torture for me.
I think if I were going that route, I'd just use my laptop and a capture device like I use in the studio... enough screen space to see everything.

I have the H4 and I dont think you can use the inputs with the built in mics, lame I know,

doesn't have that restriction and looks like a much better build quality
I have been using it just as you describe as a capture device then I edit in something else.
all that being said the H4 is awesome, but I would go for the new one for sure.
