I was 7, and I too learned on a full size acoustic, with action about half an inch off the board... what can I say, North Dakota was a really boring place to be snowed into, so I amused myself as best I could.

Sure it does. I've seen the realities of it on a daily basis for years. If the kid can't wrap their arm over the instrument or can't sit comfortably with it, the chances of the child getting frustrated and throwing in the towel loom large. If the instrument is too big for them, it's too big for them. No caring parent in their right mind would send their child out into the real world with a pair of sneakers that's two sizes too large, and if they've got any common sense at all, they'll allow similar consideration as to musical instruments.
