Nigel, I'm cheap....

I got a 24" strip of 1x12" pine, painted it black, attached a 4" tall, L-shaped piece across the front for neatness, added some supervelcro from WalMart, and put my pedals on. It cost me something less than $15, including the paint. It rests in a big black gym bag that cost me another $15 and also holds 3 gtr cables, a power strip, and an extension cord.

The only reason to get rid of would be to use more than 7 effects.
