The idea of buying a new $200 tube amp gives me the willies!

Lots of players have multiple amps, and would perhaps like to sell what they're not playing given the times.

Check the pin-board at your local music shops, and ask around.

Are there any Pawn shops in your neighborhood?

For $200 you just might find something halfway decent someone is moving up from.
