I always bring a backup. If you have pup/switch/pot problems in the middle of a set with only one guitar, obviously you're in trouble..
..but even a broken string mid-set without a backup can be a real buzz kill for you as the player or the audience if your playing goes south, or G-d forbid, you stop to change a string.
