You do, I do, we do, get a Fender Telecaster small 30 to 40 watt amp, cranked w/a little of spring reverb a lot of practice, pinch harmonics and a lot of fun...
one thing that's a little frustrating on this site is people asking questions that are geared towards what amp/effect/pickup/ will get me to the perfect tone of my heros.
Buchanan's tone was a tele thru a bf vibrolux all the way up backwards w/the reverb up a bit and on a chair backwards the rest is work study, technique and results...
Nancy Schmancy I played that guitar after his death when John Sprung aquired it from Roy's widow about 18 years ago here in DC, I played it for about an hour and half.
It was an average '53 tele with a cello type neck contour that didn't sound any better than my 53, in fact it was very microphonic on the bridge pickup, sure it was a cool blackguard tele... but certainly far from all the hype and nonsense I've read about it since, a decent tele, but beside being a great museum piece and antique...quite honestly, really no different than a decent mim classic 50's reissue w/a good pickup switch out...but no big deal! The guitar I'm talking about is the Nancy guitar with the hole drilled through the headstock....
I hope I'm not hurting anybody's feelings, or ruffling any feathers, legend or dreams ...but all the crap & pap aside that's the truth. Really!
