There have been a couple of bands who mimed without strings on their guitars too. The Clash just refused to perform anywhere they had to mime, full stop.
The ultimate though must be Teardrop Explodes, all who performed on TOTP under the influence of hallucinogenics. I wonder if thats on YouTube?
