Big John: Street roasted chestnuts were a tradition in Toronto back in the 50s-90s, while on one's way to watch the Leafs win a Stanley Cup (ahem, ie, the 60s, it's been a while). That is some good old fashioned eating. It's rare to find them now, but there's still a couple of old country gents roasting Italian chestnuts on the streets. The Chinese chestnuts aren't quite up to par, but not a bad substitute, all things considered.
