Getbent, I once spent a week in Chico at the Chico Nut Co. installing a machine. They only process almonds and there are at least 6 distinct varieties.
The guys that work there can lift the lid on a bin and tell you the exact variety inside in less than 2 seconds. I never did learn to differentiate but I ate so many almonds that week that my jaw muscles ached.
If you're ever up that way you ought to stop in a get a sample pack of all varieties. I'm sure they still do that for visitors.
