BB learned scales when he was starting out, and still practices them to this day. He also reads music and studied the Schillinger System of Composition, a mathematical approach to music. Howlin' Wolf studied theory with a prof from Roosevelt College in Chicago. He said that he wanted to learn more about what he was doing.
