Yeah, I wouldn't too carried away with the "romantic legend" of even the old blues players being totally ignorant of scales and/or theory in general. In fact, that does them a huge injustice. Freddie King comes to mind as definitely a guy who could tell you what he was doing - and he certainly did some 'non traditional' scale oriented stuff.
