I tried that when I "dyed" it pink. I used a very dark red first and sanded back leaving the "flame" in the grain standing out. The problem seemed to be that when the pink dye was mixed and used, the red dye component would soak in and stain the wood, but the white pigment component just sat on top like a thin whitewash paint. The resulting color was wrong and showed the wood's flaws very well but almost no flame. But, on the other hand the wood didn't have that much flame to start with. I've repainted the pink body with a darker 'Ballet Slipper Pink' that looks better than the pink in the hanging photo.
