Warning! Do not, repeat, do not waste your money and time with Minwax's water based stains.

On hardwoods like maple they don't soak into the wood; they just sit on the top and pile up like a layer of latex paint. If you let it sit on the wood for more than about 2 minutes before wiping it off, it dries and turns into a gummy mess. If you wipe it off while it is still wet enough to wipe, it will not have stained the wood.

After spending 2 hours trying to impart some color to the front of the pink thinline with no success, I put an even layer of the stain on and I'll let it dry in the garage till tomorrow evening. I'll try to sand it down to semi- transparency with 600 grit paper, but I have a hunch Maddy's guitar is going to end up with a pink lacquered top.
