I don't necessarily attribute it to getting older, but once I got laid off from my extremely monotonous corporate job and could not get another one to replace it, I found I've mellowed out tremendously. Being terminally unemployed means I'm never late for work, or anything. Gonna pull out in front of me and go slow? Big whoop. I'm not in a hurry anymore, so I don't give too much of a crap.
In fact, the 7 years prior to getting laid off, were among the most stressful years of my life. In a classic example of being careful of what you wish for, I had finally scored an office job. No more hot, greasy kitchens working with border-line psychopathic drug abusers. No more hot, dirty, dodging-demon-forklift-drivers factories. No more scrambling inside dangerous machinery to clean them. No more waiting for the temp agencies to call with another assignment from hell.
I hated driving to that soul-sucking black hole. Getting laid off was probably the best thing that could happen to me, financial considerations notwithstanding.
