I've got one, also used and cheap...sounded crappy when I got it. Boosted the voltage to the Boss ACA level (isn't that about 13 volts?) using my VL Pedal Power and it opened up and sounds great.

Don't know if this helps you any or not. Maybe he knows something we dont!
