for about 2 years i played country western and folk in a coffee bar and i had two main axes...'65 tele with staggered pups and '78 tele with sd 1/4 pounders
when i wanted to cut through, when the volume went up with more musicians joining the stage, i worked with the tele with the duncans even though i don't like the tone of the 1/4 pounder bridge pup
sometimes the staggered tele pickup, if played through a loud amp, could be a bit ear splitting
but for a more midrange tone, i was not about to get a gibson :)
