I taught guitar in a local music store. I was suited for it and stayed for 14 years, after starting at age 17. I made a living at it. Yet, I wanted more. I took classes at the local university in composition and theory, eventually graduating with a bachelor degree. Then came the big leap. I was accepted into a PhD program at the one of the top schools in the field. At the age of 31, I got onto a plane for the first time and went to a big city. The years that followed were the most thrilling of my life. I eventually got my degree and landed a job at a good university in a beautiful university town. I met my wife here, who is a painter in the art department. I cannot believe my good luck. I owe it all to getting on that plane.
