My guess is that this was someone's player way back when, and when the neck went bad they put on what was available.
Just because someone's selling an old guitar that's been modified doesn't automatically make it a scam.

I quite agree w/ the above....
Scam is a very Strong word for what is perhaps just an Early
Modified Guitar...we used to do that kinda stuff back in the Jurassic Period.......
