Well, I wouldn't be too hard on them if the register (computer) wasn't working. It likely wasn't their fault and being Sam Ash, a well known big-box retail music store, it's obvious they have to process sale checkouts on their registers to track inventory like the big wal-marts do... I doubt they were trying to inconvenience you.
I think you did the right thing up until the point of putting your $10 on the counter and attempting to walk out. Even though you probably didn't mean it as such, it's possible that it could have been taken as an in your face gesture, no? Hard to say without being there myself. If I was in that situation and in a hurry to check out, and they had no alternate means for me to pay, I would have just put the strings down and walked out as you ended up doing.
By the way, I rarely shop at the big box stores for anything. It's not that I don't like their stores, staff, or products, it's that I just like the vibe a whole lot more at my local mom & pop music store. And when I go there, I am never in any rush as I usually end up chatting with one of the guys I know there. Anyhow, I hope you found some strings finally.
