If there were two other employees there, one lackey, and one manager, somebody could have logged into another terminal, and rung you up. I think they just got pre-occupied/distracted with trying to figure out the issue with the terminal that was effed up, and got caught up in it.
It does sound frustrating. Good on ya for not going to silly-land and freaking out though. It's just not worth it.
Just get on-line and buy a box of strings. They'll be at your door in a few days, and you'll be stocked for awhile. That way you won't have to worry about the double digit IQ crowd at the local big-box stressing you out.
