i'd say it probably never hurts to have both. One for heavy duty travel, like if you're flying and you have to check it. Or maybe if you're letting somebody else take it someplace.

I'd like the gig bag cuz it'd definately be easier to carry. The way i figure it, you might as well get a good one. No sense buying something designed to protect the instrument if its not going to do a good job protecting it.
