I grew up on hardshell cases, but I like gig bags, in the right circumstances.
Main advantage to bags is that YOU CAN PUT THEM OVER YOUR SHOULDER. I'd think that would be a real plus at school.
I'm real gentle with my stuff, but I've noticed that other people tend to be pretty clumsy, and/or thoughtlessly destructive. So that's a factor.
