It was actually even easier than your suggestion. When I clicked on "download" from the iTunes site...it (of course) gives me the option to "Run" or to "Save". I selected save, and gave the burner-drive as the destiniation.
Simple.

Hate to tell you this, but you should have hit "run" which would have downloaded the program, installed it and got you to the registration page all at the same time. It appears you have occasional internet access, just run the program you downloaded the next time you are connected. Then register it and set up your iTunes store enable for that computer. Then you are done. It will run with or without a connection at that point.
