After I graduated from university, I got a job as an engineer at a large consulting company. I was pretty stoked, because at the time, most of the consulting companies would not hire directly out of school (most seemed to want 2-5 years of experience). In any event, I thought I was pretty special.
My grandfather, who had been a plumber in knitting mills, brought me back to reality. When he asked what I would be doing, and I described it, he asked when I was going to get a real job...and he MEANT it. Designing large power plants was not real work to him. His culture was you worked with your hands (brain work was for whimps and sissies).
