My JV golf team was able to play some tournaments on some pretty exclusive courses. The clubs were pretty generous to local HS teams, and they allowed them to use the courses on Mondays. Over the years, I played one course a number of times, and it was quite exclusive - exclusive enough to do this:

Bob Hope was in town to do some sort of show, and being the world's most visable ambassador for golf, he went to this country club to play. He was alone, but who could turn down Bob Hope. Of course, they did turn him down. They tried to find a member in the clubhouse who would sponser him as a guest, but there was no one around - so Bob had to leave and find another place to play.

I thought of that story every time I teed it up on that course!
