I'll usually (consciously) look down at the neck when i'm starting something but seem to 'feel' it from there although others say i'm looking at the neck for virtually a whole song, if i am i'm not really sure what i'm looking at.
As for singing and playing ?, forget it !!, i'm not joking when i say " I can't play and talk at the same time !, if someone comes over to me and say's something on-stage i tend to just mumble something and grin like an idiot.
As Tim say's, if you are working on it after just 1 1/2 years you sound like you are headed in the right direction so just keep at it !
