Another observation: I'll see bands (usually younger guys) where they'll alternate between clean and distorted tones via a pedal, and more often than not, the clean will cut through and sound "tough" at volume, and the distorted tone will sound mushy and quieter, because the distorted setting
seemed louder at the soundcheck!
My ideal tone is one where I can bang on chords and get some crunch, but back off and get decent cleans.
