I did a bunch of deep tints back the middle of last year; I got tired of the walnut look neck after a while. It did come in handy to save a real nice sounding neck just covered in bad natural stains in the maple.
The one thing I would change first at G + L, given the power, is to dump those G.O.T. (which stands for Gawdawful Orange Tangerine) tints they do for a very restrained maple tint. The G.O.T. got applied over some tasty birdseye, which is nuts. ( It has been backed off some, thanks, G + L)
I don't think it will turn to black; instead it will develop an opaque look or a milky look depending on the finish composition. I am not gonna stop dead from buying these tints, but I ain't putting too many eggs in that basket, if you know what I mean.
