Well, the H&K 30-DFX did arrive today. I played around with it for only about fifteen-twenty minutes so here is my quick impression:

Sometimes the reviewers on Harmony Central are dead on.

With a single-coil guitar, the Clean channel sounded pretty sweet. Perfectly fine for my level of playing.
With a humbucker guitar the Clean had a little too much booming bottom for my taste.

On the Lead/Gain channel … uh … well, the word “yuck” comes to mind.

I’m not sure what the proper sound-engineer expression is for what the Gain channel sounds like. Instead of a crunch or gritty sound that is usually associated with a good solid blues distortion and sustain, it’s, instead, sort of a throbbing – buzzing noise. Sorry, that’s the best description I can think of right now. Anyone out there know what I mean?

I have to say, even though I hardly spent much on it, I’m very disappointed. I was hoping I was going to get rid of one of my bigger amps and one of my smaller ones and let this become an “in betweener.”

If nothing else, makes me appreciate even more the sound of those solid state amps that get that sound much closer. Uh, Fender for instance comes to mind.

Oh well.
